Advice for choosing a paint colour

The Swedish colour palette that Moose Färg bases itself on is completely matt. All colours are possible, but our standard colours are typical for the Scandinavian landscape. Characteristic is, of course, a red house with white accents, with the door often painted black, green or blue.

The photos on our inspiration page give you a good impression of the colours in different types of daylight. We advise you not to rely entirely on the colours that you see on your computer screen. Photo quality and screen settings can make the colours look slightly different. Below are three ways to assess the paint colours properly.

Black paint

Our Vasa Svart is a deep matt black colour. This paint contains earth pigment which makes the black colour very colourfast; the original colour is retained even in direct sunlight. This is special because many black paints turn brownish over time. There is no deeper black paint than Vasa Svart. No wonder this colour is the most favourite among Moose Färg customers!

White paint

In our standard range, we have two tones of white paint. Norrland Vit (similar to ral 9003 or ral 9016) is a snow-white colour that combines very well with one of our brighter colours. Norrland Vit is also called Swedish white, as it is the standard white colour in Sweden. Our other white shade is Grädde. This colour can be compared to ral 9010 (off-white), the most common colour for window frames in the Netherlands. Grädde means ‘cream’ in Swedish and is just a very little bit off white. Both shades of white paint are mainly used as contrast colours, but they can be used as the main colour.

Are you looking for a white paint that keeps some of the wood colour visible? Then choose for Dimma white wash. This is not a fully opaque white colours, but gives a haze over the wood. Dimma white wash is available in both Norrland Vit and Grädde.

Grey paint

Our paint is available in five different shades of grey. From dark to light, you can choose from: Anthracit Grå (Anthracite, similar to ral 7016), Blytungs Grå (lead grey), Skiffer Grå (slate grey), Luleå Grå (soft grey) and Kiruna grå (pearl grey). Our different grey paint colours all give your garden a slightly different look. Whether you’re looking for an industrial, modern look (Antracit Grå) or more of a softer, romantic look (Kiruna Grå).

It is also possible to create a grey haze over the wood without it being completely opaque. With a so-called grey wash, the wood colour remains partially visible. It is also possible to let the wood age faster.

Blue paint

Moose Färg’s blue paint colours are special because of their metamerism. This means that the colours look different in different daylight. For example, Bohus Blå (Swedish blue) can look more blue or more green depending on if the sun is shining or not. Our Ljus Blå (light blue) looks greyish in shadow light and more light blue in brighter light. Sommer Blå (summer blue) and Siljan Blå (clear blue) are bright blue paint colours that brighten up any garden. The blue stains turn your wood into a special object that draws the eye without being garish.

Green paint

With green paint colours, you stay close to the colours of nature, while giving your wood a good protective layer against moisture and sunlight. Green paint shades fit in very nicely with green surroundings. Victoria Grön (dark green) is a classic green colour, the popular Dalarna Grön (Swedish green) is a bright shade of green and Åmål Grön (soft green) tends a little more towards olive green due to the yellow tones in it.

Red paint

The original Swedish red paint will look familiar to any Scandinavia-fanatic! Our Falu Röd is coloured with earth pigment and is therefore very strong and colour-fast. A unique colour experience, very nice in combination with one of our white paint colours.

Yellow paint

A yellow colour on your gazebo or fence will ensure that the sun is always shining in your garden! Our Skåne Gul (Swedish yellow) is a strong, deep and warm colour. For a more natural and calm yellow looking colour, choose Ljus Gul (light yellow).

Brown paint

Our brown paint is a beautiful, calm base colour. The shade of brown is dark brown and is called Visby Brun. It gives a classic yet warm look to your wood that looks natural. The brown colour contains earth pigments, making it very well covering and colour-fast.

Semi-transparent paint colours: Dimma wash

You can order all colours above as a wash version (semi-transparent). The paint gives a haze over the wood instead of an opaque layer. In this case, you order Dimma wash. Dimma means fog or mist in Swedish and gives a colour haze over the wood. The colour of the wood remains partially visible because the paint is not completely opaque, but semi-transparent.A kind of beach look. Popular colours are grey-wash and white-wash, but blue-wash or red-wash are also possible.

Looking for different paint colours?

If you’re looking for a specific colour, this is also possible (at an additional cost). You can then order a customised colour. An example of a customised wood paint colour is ‘cream white’ (ral 9001). Order your paint via customer colour and indicate in the order notes which colour you would like to receive by specifying a code from the RAL or NCS system. We will then mix the desired paint colour for you. Please note that customised colours may take a few days longer to ship.

Mixing it yourself is also a possibility. All paint colours are easy to mix with each other. You can also add pigment yourself using water-dilutable pigment.
